Fix Your Self-Worth: Five Ways to Enhance Your True Value

Jul 14, 2024 | Insights

Learn how humility, clear values, and defined goals can transform your mindset and life and elevate your self-worth.
Can you rate your self-worth on a scale of one to ten?

Go ahead. Give yourself a one if you feel worthless and a ten if you feel like you’re on top of the world.

Does it matter if you can or can’t give yourself a score?

Absolutely. Many of us underestimate our self-worth. We often see ourselves as less valuable to our family, friends, colleagues, clients, and the world than we are.

Here’s a simple exercise: ask a trusted friend to rate your self-worth.

Chances are, they’ll rate you higher than you rated yourself. This discrepancy is a shame because it likely means you aren’t entirely using your strengths and resources.

Boost your self-worth

Determining your self-worth is more complex than calculating your net worth, which I urged your inner accountant to do in last week’s Insight post. However, the real challenge lies in enhancing your self-worth. So, wake your inner counsellor and try these strategies to help you boost your self-worth:

1. Embrace humility

Humility might seem counter-intuitive when discussing self-worth. Isn’t humility about downplaying yourself? Not at all. True humility is about accepting your imperfections and recognising your strengths without arrogance. It’s a powerful asset to your self-worth.

2. Clarify Your Values

Your values should guide your words and actions. A clear set of values gives you a solid foundation, allowing you to navigate decisions and actions confidently. This alignment bolsters your self-worth.

3. Assess Your Resources and Strengths

We often focus on our weaknesses, especially in comparison to others. Phrases like “They do it so much better than I do” can be disheartening. Instead, focus on your unique strengths. Take time to evaluate your financial net worth; understanding this can provide a sense of accomplishment and contribute to your self-worth.

4. Set Clear Aspirations and Goals

Having specific goals to strive for can significantly enhance your self-worth. As you work towards these goals, each step forward reinforces your value and capability.

5. Define What is Enough

Knowing what is enough shifts your mindset from scarcity (a key indicator of low self-worth) to abundance. When you understand and accept what is enough for you, you’re more likely to find peace and contentment in various aspects of your life, from work to family to personal growth.

Self-worth comes from inside

By implementing these strategies, you can recognise and appreciate your actual value. Remember, your self-worth is not determined by external measures but by internal acknowledgement of your unique strengths and contributions. Embrace your worth and let it shine in every aspect of your life.
