Paradise on a canal in St Francis Bay
We booked a house through airbnb in St Francis Bay to stay in for a short break between Grahamstown, Knysna and families. We cannot thank our host, Sonja, enough for accepting us into her lovely house. It was an honour and a privilege to be there. As a place for us to chill out between two family visits it could not have been better. We loved the relaxed, easy style of the house, it’s spaciousness and cool light, it’s views across the canal from the deck where we sat for an early evening drink before heading out to eat in the evening and for breakfast next morning.
Sadly we were unable to meet Sonja and her family; they had to return before we arrived although we kept in touch with her before and during our stay and she proved to be an excellent host from a distance. The wonderful Elizabeth, their housekeeper, welcomed us graciously, helping us to settle in on our arrival, then looking after us in the morning.
Tempting as it was to just stay in the house, we did explore St Francis Bay and can recommend Loligos Seafood Restaurant a couple of miles further South at St Francis Port.
The beach proved a great place for an early morning run, heading North up the spit and as the tide was in at that hour the sheltered sea on the landward side of the spit proved ideal for a swim. Later the three of us walked along the wide and empty sandy beach, before heading into town for coffee and shopping. There are some interesting shops and an excellent Pick and Pay in and around the square.
Sadly we only had 24 hours in St Francis Bay. Had we known how delightful and relaxing the little town and Praslin Reach were going to be we would certainly have stayed longer and we thoroughly recommend it.
