Look to Patagonia for Purposeful Prosperity

The Story of Yvon Chouinard and Patagonia
- Chouinard makes his name as an experienced mountaineer when climbing in Yosemite National Park.
- He redesigns and manufactures mountaineering equipment with other experts to be more efficient and environmentally friendly.
- Chouinard discovers a knack for selling clothes and founds Patagonia in 1973 to provide equipment and clothes for mountaineers and hikers.
- He moulds Patagonia to his values, and his customers recognise Patagonia for its environmental protection, recycling, and the use of natural materials.
- Patagonia becomes the first company to donate a share of its profits to protect the environment.
- In 2011, Patagonia goes out on a limb when it runs its “Don’t Buy This Jacket” campaign to highlight the environmental and sustainability costs of clothing manufacturing.

Aligning values, money and vision in Patagonia
The story of Yvon Chouinard and Patagonia will resonate with anyone who seeks to live a lifestyle of Purposeful Prosperity of any degree.
Chouinard has built a profitable company based on his vision of a responsible and challenging outdoor life. Patagonia has given him wealth through publicity for his cause, experience, purpose and money.
Not only has Chouinard founded Patagonia. He is also a published author, filmmaker, and outdoor sportsman who has received awards recognising Patagonia’s drive to sustainability and environmental responsibility. He is one of Time Magazine’s globally influential personalities.
Wealth, impact and meaning in Patagonia
Chouinard may not recognise his achievements as “Purposeful Prosperity”, but all the characteristics of the Virtuous Circle of Wealth, Impact and Meaning that comprise Purposeful Prosperity are there.
- Wealth. Chouinard started with little (his first company failed, an experience in itself) except a passion for climbing and the outdoors. Over the years, he has built a wealth of knowledge, skills, influence and money. His passion is the foundation of his wealth, which has evolved into protecting the environment while benefiting from its challenges.
- Impact. Chouinard has used his wealth to improve outdoor sports and the environment. With the success of Patagonia (founded on his wealth of values and skills), he was able to highlight the environmental and sustainability dangers of clothing manufacture and consumption.
- Meaning. Does Chouinard lead a meaningful life? I don’t know, but it is easy to assume he does. He has a purpose and does what he can to achieve that purpose. That meaning and fulfilled purpose only add to his wealth in all its forms, so the cycle continues.
On the evidence, it is arguable that Chouinard lives a life of Purposeful Prosperity and is an excellent exemplar of this way of life. Not everyone will want to achieve as much as Chouinard, but his story and Patagonia’s story can help light the torch we all hold within us.
