How Orlando reinterpreted made a meaningful impact.
Orlando was no ordinary theatre. You couldn’t call it a show or an entertainment (although it was magically entertaining). Within minutes of the start, Vaughan had broken down the physical and emotional barriers that traditionally separate actor(s) from the audience. The actress and audience became one, but not in the way of the pantomime. This was an exceptional and memorable performance from a solo actress and a small support team.
After the Orlando performance, little research revealed that Dyad Productions has a particular focus. It writes and produces plays from history and classic literature, such as Orlando, enhancing them with contemporary relevance in the arenas of politics, gender, feminism, and relationships.
The Orlando performance revealed the actress’s mission
Vaughan’s two-hour solo performance as Orlando certainly had an impact. But why would she, or anyone, opt to learn the lines of an entire play and tread the boards by herself for that long. It took courage and talent, and lots of both.
I have never met the actress, but at the time, I felt that Vaughan’s mission was to make a difference to her audiences by introducing them to new perspectives on everyday issues.
The effort and stress of putting on a production such as Orlando indicate that her work has a purpose beyond just money and entertainment. It must give purpose and meaning to her life.
Orlando, Vaughan and the Virtuous Circle
To this end, Vaughan is an outstanding example of the Virtuous Circle of Wealth, Impact, and Meaning in action.
It is reasonable to assume that her wealth mainly consists of her courage, acting skills, experience, and drive.
She contributes her wealth to producing and acting in plays such as Orlando, which significantly impact her audiences.
One suspects her reward is only partly financial. However, her impact gives her life an extraordinary purpose and meaning, which, in turn, enhances her wealth.
In Orlando, Vaughan becomes a role model for all who want to live the Virtuous Circle of Wealth, Impact, and Meaning.
